The Hungarian Interior Ministry and the Hungarian Medical Chamber (MOK) are currently embroiled in a public dispute regarding the funding and functioning of the healthcare system.

The Interior Ministry has responded to recent statements from MOK, describing them as 'seriously misleading' and damaging public trust in the healthcare system.

According to the ministry, these claims have been echoed by political groups such as the Democratic Coalition and Tisza Party, indicating MOK's potential political affiliations.

In a press release, the ministry strongly refuted MOK's assertion that doctors are unable to treat patients due to hospital debts.

It stated that contrary to these claims, all patients in Hungary receive the necessary care corresponding to their condition.

The ministry highlighted its efforts in funding healthcare facilities, emphasizing that there are no financial barriers preventing surgeries and that additional resources aimed at reducing waitlists have not been fully utilized.

The statement from the Interior Ministry noted that in 2025, the government plans to allocate 3,717 billion forints to healthcare purposes, an increase of 2,519 billion forints compared to the last budget submitted by the previous left-wing government.

It insists that hospital debts are managed annually, with the government having supported debt settlements in 2024 with nearly 144 billion forints released in three installments.

Moreover, the ministry accused MOK of misleading the public regarding the funding of healthcare services, pointing to the wages paid as supplementary financing to health service providers.

It claimed that these wages constitute more than half of personnel-related financing and alleged that MOK omits consideration of operating costs included in the budget of the Public Procurement and Supply Directorate.

To ensure costs are covered accurately, the ministry stated it has initiated data collection on healthcare expenditures to provide real-value financing for medical services.

The 2025 budget includes an additional 150 billion forints to support these efforts.

The Interior Ministry also contested MOK's claim that the sector's leadership fails to discuss healthcare issues transparently.

It argued that Hungary’s health sector leaders are present at all professional forums and negotiations, providing open information on the sector’s state.

Highlighting steps to improve healthcare quality, the ministry implemented a multi-step leadership selection system to appoint competent managers to hospital leadership roles.

Recently, five director-general appointments were made under this system.

The ministry called upon MOK to report any misconduct it becomes aware of, backed by specifics, to address such issues promptly.

It criticized MOK for making general criticisms without details, attributing such actions to political motives rather than objective concerns.

The Interior Ministry has urged MOK to halt activities undermining public confidence in healthcare and to return to its professional chamber functions.
