Dialogue for Hungary (Párbeszéd) has revealed its list of candidates for the upcoming European Parliament (EP) elections, with Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony featuring among the ranks.
"As a result of the votes, a strong green list has emerged, composed of civil activists and led by Benedek Jávor, who, together with Mayor Gergely Karácsony, has been re-elected to the party’s leadership," read the party's
Facebook post.
The party emphasized the significant role that both politicians and local government officials play in the battle against environmental challenges and the climate crisis.
Committed to green values and effective action against the climate crisis, Dialogue for Hungary (Párbeszéd – Zöldek) aims to assert these principles in the municipal and EP elections slated for June 9, the post further highlighted. According to the announcement, the list features numerous dedicated experts, activists, and young individuals alongside "green politicians."
Key figures on the Dialogue's European Parliament candidate list include:
* Benedek Jávor, executive member, head of Budapest’s Brussels office, and former EP member,
* Judit Hlavács, anti-battery factory activist and former municipal representative in Göd,
* Krisztián Kocsis, neurobiologist-researcher and head of the Roma Workshop,
* Tímea Szabó, parliamentary group leader,
* Gergely Karácsony, Mayor of Budapest and executive member,
* Mia Machač-Tóth, student movement activist,
* Richárd Barabás, party spokesperson and Deputy Mayor of Újbuda,
* Andrea Szaszkó, anti-battery factory activist,
* Gábor Erőss, party vice-mayor of the VIII district,
* Rebeka Szabó, party co-chair and member of the National Assembly.
Their goal, as stated, is "to further strengthen the representation of green values in the June 9 elections, based on our 14-point green minimum program, which has already been endorsed by several parties and local governments."
LMP REFUSES TO TAKE PART IN "THIS CHARADE"
During its congress held in Budapest on Saturday, LMP (Politics Can Be Different party) also made headlines as Péter Ungár delivered a speech. The party's parliamentary group leader and co-chair announced their intention to run independently in the European parliamentary election and clarified they would not support a mayoral candidate lacking substantive positions.
Ungár directed sharp criticism at the opposition alliances, including Momentum, the Democratic Coalition, and Gergely Karácsony. Regarding the mayor, Ungár stated that he "has cultivated a policy where it's not about what he stands for, but about how he can portray himself as a victim of Viktor Orbán on
Facebook.” He recalled how Karácsony dubbed his colleagues in the opposition as 'republicans,' suggesting that the mayor's focus may be on the 2026 political contests rather than city governance.
Ungár also reiterated disagreement with Ferenc Gyurcsány’s previous remarks that Karácsony treats Budapest as a political object. "Unfortunately, it seems the mayor now agrees with this statement," commented Ungár, expressing concern that the discourse continually revolves around personalities rather than substance. He added that "a charade is currently taking place" in which they refuse to participate.
LMP had previously indicated discussions with former Transport State Secretary Dávid Vitézy regarding his potential mayoral candidacy.
