Austria: Four women and a girl killed in Vienna in 24 hours
In Vienna, Austria, five females, including a teenager, were tragically killed within a single day.
On Friday, in a brothel within the city, a man fatally stabbed three women, and police subsequently apprehended a 27-year-old Afghan suspect found hiding nearby with a knife.
In a separate incident, a woman and her daughter were found dead in their apartment, with the mother's husband and the girl's father being the primary suspect in the potential strangulation case.
These events have caused public outcry, with activists referring to the day as "Black Friday" and demanding immediate measures to combat violence against women.
The three women were discovered in the Brigittenau district after a witness contacted emergency services, while the mother and daughter were in their Erdberg home. The two cases appear unrelated.
Police spokesman Philip Hasslinger reported that blunt force might have been involved in the second incident. Eva-Maria Holzleitner of the Social Democratic Party has called for a crisis meeting to address femicide, emphasizing the need for a national action plan.
Klaudia Frieben of the Austrian Women's Ring highlighted the day's significance with a reference to "Black Friday" on social media.
Statistics show that from 2010 to 2020, 319 women in Austria have been victims of femicide, predominantly at the hands of intimate partners or ex-partners. In response, the Austrian government has pledged approximately €25 million to initiatives combating violence against women.
