Anikó Nádai: "I Still Don't Feel Strong Enough for Public Engagement"
Anikó Nádai, who took over from Lilu as host of "Marrying a Farmer", a role she has been filling since 2019, discusses her experiences and reflections.
"It was in the third year that I finally felt at home in the show. Initially, there was a huge pressure to perform well and a strong desire to prove myself, given I was taking over from someone like Lilu, who I view as a role model, which undeniably added to the pressure. Although, even besides that, I’ve always had a strong desire to meet expectations and prove myself. The first year was filled with anxiety, the second year I was more confident, but by the third year, I could truly be myself," Nádai shares.
When asked about her relationship with the show's participants, Nádai reveals, "We spent a lot of time with everyone, being welcomed into their homes. The hospitality we receive is incredible, always welcoming us with open arms. It’s impossible not to become attached to such genuinely kind people. For instance, I've kept in touch with 'Farmer Misi' since the first season; an incredibly kind-hearted – perhaps overly so – individual. Interestingly, it’s from the first season that many have remained in my life, primarily these are the individuals I stay in contact with. However, I’m always open to making new friends and reciprocate by adding those who add me on social media."
Discussing the challenge of gaining the participants' trust, Nádai comments, "It’s quite an odd situation. Arriving as a stranger, being allowed into their homes, and then starting to inquire about their love life and past relationships on camera... It's not exactly a natural scenario. That's why it's crucial for me to be open with them, to help ease their nervousness about being on camera. I advise them to see it as an adventure they will never regret, regardless of the outcome. Sometimes, the show helps them find a partner indirectly. For example, after the show, one of the participants, Gábor, from a previous season, met his current partner as a result of his participation in the show. I strive to be friendly and carefree on the show, not only for my sake but to also ease the participants. 'Marrying a Farmer' is an honest show, and I love doing this for that very reason. We work to ensure it truly reflects the participants' lives."
When questioned on the potential for real, long-lasting relationships in match-making TV shows, Nádai said, "It’s tough. There have been instances where I thought two people were perfect for each other, only to find one leaving immediately after the show ended. Despite being in television for over a decade and considering myself good at reading people, it's hard to predict with certainty. However, we have had successes, such as Roland and Niki, who have been together for four years, and Gergő and Kíra from last year's season have already moved in together. Those seeking fame probably wouldn't choose this show but a different platform. No one has become famous from our show."
Commenting on the ongoing interest in 'Marrying a Farmer,' Nádai highlights, "Even though our country is small, there's still an incredible amount of people applying to certain shows on RTL. Our formula is simple: if the preview shows relatable farmers, people apply. It's a challenge finding participants who can balance searching for a partner with their agricultural responsibilities, as farming is a 365-day-a-year job. Fortunately, we've always had enough applicants."
Nádai also touches on personal insights, including her family life, managing early mornings for 'The Morning Show,' and coping with negativity online. "It's tough reading harsh comments online, which has made it challenging to fully embrace my role as a host," she admits. Despite the challenges, Nádai remains undaunted, cherishing the positive experiences and learning opportunities television has offered her. She also respects the courage of those like Lilu, who stand firm in their beliefs, despite knowing the potential backlash.
Lastly, reflecting on whether she would participate in a show like 'Való Világ' if she were younger today, Nádai responds, "While 'Való Világ' remains a positive memory and was a fantastic experience, today I might not make the same decision."
Through her candid sharing, Anikó Nádai continues to connect with her audience, making a significant mark both on and off-screen.
