Western European Stock Markets Close Significantly Down Amid Global Concerns

Major indices record substantial losses as fears of a global recession rise.
Leading Western European stock markets experienced significant downturns on Monday, marking a continuation of negative market sentiment.

The London FTSE 100 index closed down 4.38%, while the Frankfurt DAX index fell by 4.26%.

The Paris CAC 40 index registered a decline of 4.78%.

The Eurozone's EuroStoxx 50 index decreased by 4.41%.

In Milan, the index dropped by 5.18%, and Madrid’s market closed down by 5.11%.

Following the close of European markets, the Dow Jones Industrial Average in New York was down by 1.76%, with the S&P 500 index seeing a decline of 1.03%, and the Nasdaq composite index falling by 0.86%.

These declines reflect a continuation of the market downturn that began on Thursday, driven by escalating concerns regarding trade tensions and the potential for a global recession.

In commodity markets, the price of Brent crude oil decreased by $1.28, or 1.95%, reaching $64.30 per barrel, a level not seen since 2021.

Gold futures were reported at $2,996.45 per ounce, marking a 1.28% decline (a drop of $38.95).

In the European gas market, the price at the TTF Dutch gas exchange for the nearest future contract, scheduled for May, saw a decrease of 1.212% compared to the previous trading day’s closing value, settling at €35.96 per megawatt-hour.

This price reflects a significant drop from three months ago, when gas traded at €45.44, and from a year ago at €31.85. Two years prior, the price was recorded at €43.04.
