During a national tour, a woman publicly announced her intention to run for mayor in opposition to the controversial György Simonka.
This significant declaration came from Peter Magyar’s tour stop in Mezőhegyes, Békés County, on Friday. It highlights a growing resistance to allowing the former ruling party member of Békés County, who is accused of budgetary fraud, to be the sole candidate in the June 9 elections.
The woman in question, Violetta Kocsis from Pusztaottlaka, revealed her plan alongside three fellow municipal council candidates. They had registered earlier that morning, driven by their dissatisfaction with Simonka's potential uncontested bid. This development was first noticed by the TISZA Party's deputy leader through a video posted on YouTube.
"I am Violetta Kocsis from Pusztaottlaka," she introduced herself on the video. She detailed her return to Békés County 11 years ago, after traveling around Hungary and Europe since the 'System Change' in 1993. Her announcement marks her strong objection to György Simonka's candidacy, despite the latter facing charges that could link him to a criminal case involving damages of 1.4 billion HUF.
Simonka György had previously announced his intention to run in the local elections of June 9 under the "Renew Pusztaottlaka Movement," notwithstanding his legal troubles. This announcement was made via his
Facebook page, a decision that was revealed to have implications for the position of the sole candidate only days later.
The situation developed further when the current Fidesz mayor, Pál-Árgyelán Elvira, opted not to seek re-election, citing her family's wishes against her prior intentions. In contrast, Simonka suggested in his posts that internal conflicts within Fidesz, including what he referred to as character assassination against both him and Pál-Árgyelán Elvira, had led to their exclusion from the party. He insinuated that the orchestrated campaign and particular tendering issues against him involved parliamentary representative Norbert Erdős and Minister of Construction and Transportation János Lázár.
