In a show of support for children, victims, and a healthy society, Hungary's most well-known YouTubers called for a demonstration on Friday evening at Heroes' Square, where a crowd of tens of thousands assembled.
We are providing live text coverage of the event, which you can read by clicking here. The catalyst for the protest was a nationwide scandal involving pardons that shook the country, leading to the resignation of President Katalin Novák, while Judit Varga announced her withdrawal from public life, and on Friday, Reformed Bishop Zoltán Balog also resigned.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán posted on the preparations for his annual policy address. The prime minister is scheduled to deliver his speech at the Várkert Bazaar at 3 pm, and of course, Index will provide live minute-by-minute updates. Amidst the height of the protest, the head of government wrote on his
Facebook page: We are preparing.
As we reported, Viktor Orbán had already posted about the annual review on Friday afternoon, sharing a video with excerpts from his previous address. In the morning, he also met with China's Minister of Public Security.
A few days later, following the prime minister's address, Ferenc Gyurcsány is set to deliver his own assessment. Index will not be present at Viktor Orbán's speech: the organizing Foundation for a Civic Hungary informed that media access would be limited and photographs of the event would be available through MTI.
According to 24.hu, they, along with Telex, ATV, RTL, Blikk, and Radio Free Europe, experienced similar restrictions, while 444.hu conveyed that they (lacking an invitation) could not even attempt to register.
Furthermore, numerous international news agencies' registration requests were rejected.
These include the Associated Press (AP), Agence France-Presse (AFP), Reuters, Bloomberg, and Xinhua. Following Orbán's policy address, the Fidesz party will also have a parliamentary group meeting next week. There, Viktor Orbán is expected to give another speech behind closed doors, and several important decisions may also be made during the meeting.
