Tisza Párt's Péter Magyar Highlights Political Fractures in Romania

In a recent address following an eleven-day journey, Magyar criticized the RMDSZ for its ties to the Fidesz party and emphasized local concerns faced by communities in Romania.
Péter Magyar, the president of the Tisza Párt (Tisza Party), described his eleven-day march culminating in the city of Nagyvárad as a profound experience.

During a press conference held on Saturday afternoon at the journey's endpoint, Magyar reflected on the insights gained while visiting several towns over the past week and a half.

He expressed that he learned much about the genuine problems facing locals and had numerous positive personal experiences along the way.

The Romanian Hungarian Democratic Union (RMDSZ) did not attend the event at Nagyvárad upon Magyar's arrival.

He alleged that this absence signifies their continued collaboration with the Fidesz party, asserting that the Hungarian community in Transylvania does not vote in alignment with Viktor Orbán's directives.

Magyar expressed his willingness to engage in discussions with representatives from RMDSZ regarding the interests of Hungarians beyond the borders of Romania.

Magyar criticized RMDSZ for what he described as operating on the Fidesz agenda, and suggested that their presence in the European People’s Party (EPP) remains to serve as a form of espionage.

When asked about current communications with RMDSZ, he stated, "We sometimes greet each other in the lift in Strasbourg, that’s about it."

During his eleven-day journey to Nagyvárad, Magyar met with various mayors and local council members, although some declined to appear on camera with him.

He expressed gratitude to politicians from these towns for sharing their local issues.

The foremost concerns reported included housing, a lack of adequate workforce, and the degradation of rural services, particularly in transportation and healthcare.

Addressing the response from a small group of protesters during his speech, Magyar noted that he hardly paid them any attention and deemed it unworthy of discussion.

He indicated awareness of the logistics behind the protest, mentioning that buses with Hungarian license plates were involved, and he hinted at knowing which government-affiliated company provided transport for the demonstrators.

Throughout the march, he encountered some negative remarks, but asserted that for every instance of disparagement, there were numerous supportive comments.

Magyar acknowledged the existing political divisions but emphasized that animosity should not be directed at the supporters of opposing parties and highlighted the importance of losing with dignity.

He reflected on the evolving political landscape, stating that what was once conceivable in March of the previous year has now grown beyond those parameters, asserting that the government can no longer stifle change.

"I am fresher than ever," he commented.

He also addressed a controversial legislative measure, referring to it as a suffocating transparency law, stating, "Hands off civil society, the free press, Tisza, competing political communities, and Ruszin-Szendi Romulusz!" He claimed that there is no longer belief in the narratives propagated by government propaganda regarding Tisza members and others.
