Chinese automaker BYD leads battery electric vehicle sales in Europe for the first time, significantly increasing its market share.
In April 2023, Chinese automaker BYD outperformed
Tesla in the sales of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in Europe, according to market research data from Jato Dynamics.
BYD sold 7,231 electric vehicles in the European Union, representing a 169% increase compared to the same month the previous year.
In contrast,
Tesla saw a 49% decline in sales, with 7,165 vehicles sold.
The overall BEV sales in Europe increased by 28% year-on-year, reaching 184,312 units.
The leading automotive group, Volkswagen, also reported significant growth, with a 61% rise in sales to 23,514 units, which includes contributions from the Skoda brand.
Skoda's electric vehicle sales skyrocketed by 214% to 13,598 units.
The Skoda Elroq topped the BEV model sales rankings with 7,998 units sold in April, followed closely by three Volkswagen models.
Notably, the Volkswagen ID.7 experienced a 640% surge in sales, totaling 6,776 vehicles and ranking third for the month.
Sales for the
Tesla Model Y and Volvo EX30 declined as well, dropping by 53% to 4,495 units and 57% to 3,712 units, respectively.
Jato Dynamics' data for 28 European countries indicated that new passenger car registrations remained nearly stagnant in April, with 1,078,521 new cars sold, a marginal increase of 1,399 units, equivalent to a 0.1% rise compared to April of the previous year.
BYD's expansion is expected to play a significant role in the Hungarian economy.
Following a major investment in Szeged, where the company plans to establish its European headquarters, BYD has announced the creation of 2,000 new jobs.
The company is also set to launch a new affordable model in Hungary, priced at under 8 million forints, with production scheduled to commence soon.
