Surján takes over from Müller Cecília, bringing over 15 years of public health experience.
Starting June 1, Surján Orsolya will assume the responsibilities of Hungary's National Chief Medical Officer, succeeding Müller Cecília.
Surján previously served as the deputy national chief medical officer.
She has extensive expertise in epidemiology, public health, regulatory duties, and health policy, with more than 15 years of experience in various roles within the healthcare sector.
Since 2001, she has worked in diverse capacities, including hospital hygienist and infectious disease specialist, and she has held the position of county chief medical officer.
Surján was also the director of the National Institute for Health Development and later the National Public Health Center, where she gained significant experience in public health and health promotion tasks.
According to the announcement, Surján will be joined by her new team, which includes Szabó Enikő as deputy for public health, Pálffyné Poór Rita as deputy for pharmaceuticals, and Torma Albert as general deputy for health emergencies.
Müller Cecília held the position since October 2018, leading the predecessor of the National Center for Public Health and the integrated pharmaceutical authority.
Under her leadership, the institution played a crucial role in the response to the
COVID-19 pandemic and coordinated numerous public health and pharmaceutical developments.
Her efforts contributed to the safety of the public health and epidemiological system, making a long-lasting impact on the sector.
In a statement regarding Müller Cecília's retirement, Interior Minister Sándor Pintér expressed his appreciation and gratitude for her decades of outstanding professional service.
