Severe Weather Causes Mass Collision in Tour de Hongrie

A tumultuous second stage of the Tour de Hongrie results in multiple rider injuries due to hazardous weather conditions.
The Tour de Hongrie's second stage, covering a distance of 178 kilometers between Veszprém and Siófok, faced severe weather conditions that culminated in a mass collision among participants.

Riders had been warned ahead of the race about the potential for rain and strong winds, including gusts classified as stormy.

The incident occurred in the Tótvázsony area, with 123 kilometers remaining in the race.

Initially, the stage was proceeding smoothly; however, as the weather deteriorated, a team member from Red Bull–BORA–hansgrohe lost control and veered off the road, which resulted in a chain reaction as several other riders, unable to avoid the fallen competitor, collided and fell.

Emergency medical services swiftly arrived at the scene, with two ambulances and a rescue helicopter dispatched to treat and transport injured riders to local hospitals.

Although the race was allowed to continue, the riders adjusted their speed in response to the chaotic conditions.

Dutch cyclist Danny van Poppel, who had previously won the first stage, claimed victory again in the sprint finish.

Hungarian cyclist János Pelikán managed to maintain his lead in the white jersey competition despite the tumultuous events.

After the race, Van Poppel remarked on the need to mentally shift focus following the crash, expressing a desire for further success after securing two stage victories.

Pelikán described the stage as challenging, particularly due to the side winds contributing to the accidents, but expressed satisfaction with his performance, despite not gaining the yellow jersey.

The 100th edition of the Tour de Hongrie is notable for the absence of previous overall winners, including Attila Valter.

Despite this, fifteen Hungarian cyclists are competing for the white jersey, which designates the best domestic rider.

This cohort includes thirteen cyclists representing three and a half Hungarian continental teams, with defending white jersey champion Márton Dina participating.

The overall standings are expected to be significantly impacted by the upcoming third stage, which will commence from the Gödöllő Royal Palace and feature a mountain finish at Kékestető.

Results from the second stage include:
- Danny van Poppel (Netherlands, Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe) - 3:59:46 hours
- Dylan Groenewegen (Netherlands, Jayco AlUla) - same time
- Tim Torn Teutenberg (Germany, Lidl-Trek) - same time

Overall Race Leaders:
- Van Poppel - 8:53:44 hours
- Pelikán János (United Shipping) - 8 seconds behind
- Groenewegen - 10 seconds behind.
