Prosecutors Allege FBI Agent Lied About Bribery Involving Biden in Ukraine
Prosecutors have accused an FBI agent, Alexander Smirnov, of fabricating allegations that President Joe Biden and his son accepted bribes from a Ukrainian company, according to reports from the Associated Press.
Smirnov had filed a report in June 2020 claiming that Burisma, a Ukrainian energy company, bribed the then Vice President Biden and his son Hunter Biden with $5 million each (equivalent to 1.8 billion Hungarian forints) in either 2015 or 2016.
However, the prosecutors argue that Smirnov's allegations were entirely made up. They assert that Smirnov had only a simple business relationship with the firm he reported on and accused Biden of misconduct during his presidential campaign after previously expressing his disdain for the Democratic presidential nominee.
The former FBI informant is charged by the prosecutors with giving false testimony, though Smirnov has yet to testify in the case. The bribery accusation plays a pivotal role in the charges against Hunter Biden, through which Republicans are attacking both the President and his son. More comprehensive details on this matter have been previously discussed in our earlier coverage.
