Pope Francis has appointed Katalin Karikó, the Nobel Prize-winning Vice President of the pharmaceutical company BioNTech, as an ordinary member of the Pontifical Academy for Life, the Holy See Press Office announced on Saturday.
The statement underscored that Katalin Karikó's scientific research led to the development of mRNA-based
vaccines, for which she received the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 2023.
Established in 1994, the Pontifical Academy for Life addresses bioethical issues with a focus on the protection of life. The academy has a maximum of seventy members who are appointed by the pope for a five-year term.
Karikó has been honored with numerous prestigious domestic and international accolades for her work. In 2020, she was the first recipient of the Public Media Person of the Year Award.
