New Report Reveals Smartphones with the Fastest Internet Speeds

The well-known speed testing company Ookla has released its latest analysis on the upload and download speeds of smartphones.
Ookla, the company behind the widely used Speedtest application, has unveiled a new analysis based on data from US mobile networks, examining how smartphones performed in terms of download and upload speeds, as well as latency times during the last quarter of the previous year. While the study was conducted in the United States, the performance of these phones is generally expected to be similar elsewhere, subject to variations in network performance.

Leading the download speed rankings is Apple's top-tier 2023 iPhone model, the iPhone 15 Pro Max, with an average download speed of 213.84 Mbps. In second place is another Apple device, the iPhone 15 Pro, with an average download speed of 189.33 Mbps. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 took third place, with a speed of 184.69 Mbps, followed by the Galaxy S23 Ultra (181.04 Mbps) and the iPhone 15 (172.12 Mbps).

For upload speeds, the iPhone 15 Pro Max was also ahead of the pack, with 14.70 Mbps, exceeding that of the iPhone 15 Pro at 12.90 Mbps, the Galaxy S23 Ultra's 13.88 Mbps, the Galaxy Z Fold 4's 12.41 Mbps, and the iPhone 15's 12.15 Mbps.

When it came to latency, critical for gaming experiences, the Galaxy S23 Ultra claimed the top spot with 52 ms, closely followed by the Galaxy Z Fold 4 at 53 ms. Both the iPhone 15 Pro Max and the iPhone 15 Pro clocked in at 54 ms of latency. Among the five phones listed by Ookla, the iPhone 15 trailed with 55 ms.

The results could provide some vindication for Apple, as Samsung's devices had outperformed Apple's then-flagship model, the iPhone 14, in the final quarter of 2022.

In the United States, the fastest modem chip during the fourth quarter was the Qualcomm Snapdragon X70 5G. This modem chip is found in devices like the iPhone 15 series and the Galaxy S23 series. It boasted a median download speed of 205.38 Mbps and a median upload speed of 14.10 Mbps. By comparison, the previous generation Snapdragon X65 5G modem chip had an average download speed of 151.54 Mbps and an average upload speed of 11.79 Mbps.

In the realm of application processors (APs), the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 led the way with an average download speed of 173.55 Mbps and an average upload speed of 13.13 Mbps. The preceding generation, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ AP, had an average download speed of 169.27 Mbps and an upload speed of 11.95 Mbps.
