Kalotay Kristóf's resignation as Sümeg's deputy mayor follows an inquiry into potential misuse of EU funds linked to a local park project.
On April 10, an unusual scene unfolded at the Sümeg municipality when officials from Hungary's National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV) conducted a search of the local government offices.
According to reports, investigators seized documentation, invoices, and data storage devices related to a park project known locally as "Lopez Park," which was constructed with a funding of approximately 6.5 million HUF from the European Union late last year.
The park, characterized by a sparse appearance, has raised suspicions locals have dubbed it.
The investigation was initiated following public concern about potential embezzlement of the allocated EU funds.
In addition to NAV, the Győr Regional Investigative Prosecutor's Office has also launched an inquiry.
In this case, the investigation pertains not to budget fraud, but rather to allegations of bribery and the acceptance of bribes, following a report by the local clerk.
This has revealed another case that could have severe political implications for the ruling Fidesz party in Sümeg.
On Sunday, Kristóf Kalotay, the KDNP deputy mayor of Sümeg, announced his resignation, reportedly linked to the controversial matters surrounding the local government rather than internal dissatisfaction or factional struggles within the party.
In contrast to the resignation of Gergely Gaal—who cited the leadership's loss of credibility—Kalotay's announcement strictly referenced local issues.
He stated on his
Facebook page that his decision was influenced by recent events at the municipality, which he could not identify with, emphasizing his sense of responsibility to the community over his position.
Kalotay's departure may pose challenges for the Fidesz party, as he was appointed as deputy mayor despite not being elected to the Sümeg council in the last municipal elections in 2022. He ran as a candidate aligned with Fidesz-KDNP but missed out on the final council seat by over 150 votes.
Since taking office, he has now distanced himself from the Fidesz-aligned mayor, László Végh, just six months into his term, stating he will continue to play a role in local politics as the secretary of the KDNP in Sümeg, albeit outside his previous position.
The resignation follows a series of allegations against the Sümeg local government regarding financial mismanagement.
Kalotay announced that he filed a report against unknown perpetrators, asserting that accountability is fundamental to public service in Hungary.
He did not elaborate on specific incidents that prompted this decision.
The investigation involving NAV began over a month prior to his resignation, following a complaint filed by Mihály Kovács, the local opposition party leader.
Kovács previously called into question the legitimacy of the funding for Lopez Park, stating that the financial resources allocated through EU funding did not match the park's actual conditions.
He noted that he had been interviewed by NAV regarding the matter, which has since been merged with the clerk's complaint.
His speculation suggests that Kalotay's resignation may have been influenced by information he became aware of concerning another application from 2022, linked to excessive payments purportedly sought to be authorized by modifying municipal documents.
The investigation identified attempts to alter official records to justify substantial disbursements as project manager fees, which an internal administrator refused to process.
The Fidesz party holds a majority in Sümeg, with five seats out of a nine-member local council.
The four opposition members have initiated a motion to dissolve the council in light of the ongoing legal proceedings.
They express hope that members loyal to Navracsics Tibor, a regional leader and government minister, will support their motion to restore clarity and stability.
This incident marks another in a series of controversies during Végh László's tenure as mayor, including previous allegations involving his partner's fraudulent educational credentials and considerable financial irregularities uncovered within the municipality.
As the 2026 elections approach, the Fidesz party has seen its local influence wane, with reports indicating challenges surrounding Végh's leadership amidst growing public dissatisfaction.
Local political dynamics may continue to shift in response to these controversies as stakeholders navigate the implications for future elections.
