Joseph Horváth: The Possibility of an Escalating War Draws Closer
According to the security policy expert, "neither side's explanation is good, making our region more dangerous".
Deploying devices capable of carrying nuclear warheads in Poland could potentially deter, from a Polish perspective, but could also make Poland a target from a Russian viewpoint, said the security policy advisor for the Center for Fundamental Rights on the current affairs channel M1's Tuesday evening program.
In response to the suggestion that the danger of escalating war has increased, the expert said: "at least the possibility has drawn closer."
He added that so far, both the American and the Russian sides have shown "a certain level of restraint," and beyond the classic diplomatic channels, there is ongoing communication and dialogue between the two sides, which could avoid an escalation spiral.
Regarding the arrival of American troops in Ukraine, Joseph Horváth said that this could prevent the accusation that the United States is providing weapons to Ukraine without overseeing their fate; this recent announcement is more about this aspect.
"This ten to twenty American soldiers will not significantly influence the situation," the expert noted. However, he believes that the European Union is not prepared, either economically or militarily: in the event of a ground attack, they could resist for one, maximum three weeks.
