Discussions focus on political and economic cooperation between Hungary and the Republika Srpska
Hungarian Prime Minister
Viktor Orban hosted Milorad Dodik, the President of the Republika Srpska, in Budapest on Monday for talks at the Karmelita Monastery.
The meeting included discussions on a working plan for political and economic cooperation between Hungary and the Republika Srpska leading up to 2025.
During his visit, Dodik is also scheduled to attend a ceremony honoring Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic.
Dodik has previously made controversial statements regarding the Srebrenica massacre, describing it as a 'myth' created by Bosniaks.
He compared this narrative to Serbia's own narrative around Kosovo, claiming that the Bosnian government seeks to legally prohibit the denial of the genocide in Srebrenica due to a lack of substantial evidence supporting the allegations.
The Srebrenica massacre occurred in July 1995, during which Bosnian Serb forces systematically killed over 8,000 Bosniak men and boys in the town of Srebrenica.
Many of the victims were unarmed, and accounts of the violence indicate they faced torture and mistreatment.
The women and girls who were not killed were reportedly transported to areas controlled by the Bosnian Army.
The United Nations has designated July 11 as a day of remembrance for the Srebrenica genocide.
However, of the approximately 200 member states that voted on the resolution, only 84 supported it, with 68 abstaining and 19, including Hungary, voting against it.
The Hungarian government has stated that its opposition is rooted in the belief that such a day of remembrance could exacerbate tensions in the Balkans.
On the same day of Dodik's visit, Orban will host a ceremonial dinner for Vucic, who will receive the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit from Hungarian President Katalin Novák, following Orban's recommendation.
This marks the second meeting between the two leaders this year, the first being in January, where they discussed energy supply security, defense matters, and economic cooperation.
