Hadházy Ákos Leads Eleventh Protest Against Hungarian Government Policies

Thousands march to the Sovereignty Protection Authority amid rising tensions over controversial legislation.
Hadházy Ákos, an independent member of the Hungarian Parliament, led his eleventh protest demonstration at the Sovereignty Protection Authority's headquarters, located on Sánc Street, following a march from Ferenciek tere on Tuesday afternoon.

The protest was organized as a response to laws that Hadházy described as being 'written from Putin’s score'.

Protesters encountered a police cordon at the entrance of the authority’s building, where the windows were shrouded.

Hadházy has been organizing weekly protests for over two months, initially rallying against proposed restrictions on the right to assembly, and more recently focusing on legislation perceived to target independent media.

During the demonstration, speeches were delivered not only by Hadházy but also by Krisztina Baranyi, the mayor of Ferencváros, alongside students and activists.

In a symbolic gesture, Hadházy attempted to hand a flower to a police officer, which was declined; he then threw the flower into the garden of the Sovereignty Protection Authority.

In a statement to the crowd, he noted that future protests would include eggs, symbolizing escalating frustrations.

The turnout included a significant number of demonstrators, contributing to chants of 'AVH!'—a reference to Hungary's secret police during the socialist era—as they neared the authority's building.

Hadházy acknowledged the demonstrators' participation, expressing gratitude for their presence and ongoing support.

Many in the crowd showed their support by honking car horns as they marched, signaling a more positive reception from motorists compared to previous protests.

As the crowd moved, they persistently chanted 'we will not stop'.

Hadházy outlined the difficult position of police officers, stating they had sworn to protect citizens yet now found themselves in a role requiring the defense of alleged criminals.

Despite this, he urged supporters to applaud the officers involved in maintaining order during the protest.

The protest included representatives from the political movement Momentum, who also carried party flags and set off smoke flares in solidarity.

Amidst the speeches, Hadházy reiterated his commitment to continuing protests every Tuesday until the controversial legislation is revoked.

Attendees expressed their discontent with the government’s actions, particularly in relation to the newly proposed 'eliminating law', which critics argue aims to restrict independent media and civil organizations.

Baranyi declared that if the eliminating law were passed, she would propose creating a 50 million forint budget to support organizations impacted by the new legislation.

Student speaker Bendegúz Mayer articulated concerns reminiscent of dictatorial regimes, asserting that any dissent against the ruling authority was treated as hostility towards the state.

Referring to the proposed law as an extension of oppressive Russian practices, Mayer claimed it allowed officials to target individuals at will under the guise of protecting national sovereignty.

The protest unfolded at a time of heightened public scrutiny of governmental actions, as Hadházy's demonstrations have consistently called attention to regulations perceived to infringe on civil liberties since their inception.

Approximately 50 million forints have been earmarked to support various tax-deductible contributions for organizations listed by the Sovereignty Protection Authority, should the proposed legislation be enacted.

The Hungarian parliament is currently deliberating on the proposed eliminating law, which has yet to be approved but has progressed through committee discussions, drawing significant public and political backlash.
