European leaders express relief as first hostages are freed under ceasefire agreement with Hamas
European Union leaders have expressed relief and optimism following the announcement of a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of the first hostages.
António Costa, President of the European Council, used the social media platform X on Sunday to welcome the ceasefire's implementation and the freeing of three hostages.
Among the first freed were Romi Gonen, Emily Damari, and Doron Steinbrecher, who were released with the assistance of the International Red Cross.
The agreement involves Hamas releasing a total of 33 hostages deemed humanitarian cases over a 42-day period, potentially followed by the freeing of an additional 64 Israeli hostages in exchange for the withdrawal of Israeli forces and ending military operations.
Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, has called for the release of all remaining hostages, emphasizing the significance of this move as a potential new chapter for Israeli and Palestinian relations.
She reaffirmed Europe's commitment to supporting the maintenance of the ceasefire.
British Foreign Secretary David Lammy also welcomed the hostage release, including that of British national Emily Damari.
He thanked Qatar, Egypt, and the United States for their roles in facilitating the agreement.
Lammy stressed the importance of fully implementing the ceasefire, ensuring the return of all hostages, and facilitating aid into Gaza.
He reiterated London's long-standing position advocating for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, aimed at allowing Israelis and Palestinians to live peacefully side by side.
British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has voiced similar sentiments, underlining the need for a sustainable future for both the Israeli and Palestinian peoples.
He highlighted the necessity of a two-state solution that secures Israel's stability alongside a sovereign Palestinian state.
This ceasefire development comes amidst ongoing international efforts to resolve the longstanding Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with a focus on achieving lasting peace and stability in the region.
