Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge's Health Sparks Unfounded Conspiracy Theories

Kensington Palace released a statement on January 17th clarifying that Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, was hospitalized the previous day to undergo a planned abdominal surgery.
In the statement, it was also noted that her public engagements would be paused until Easter, with an assurance that the surgery had been successful, although she would remain in hospital care for an additional 10 to 14 days.

Normally, a hospital stay of this nature would not be newsworthy for most, but given that it concerns a beloved and prominent member of the British royal family, speculation has run rampant: what happened to Catherine? She was last publicly photographed with her children on December 25th, and since then has been conspicuously absent from the public eye, save for official statements, leading some to liken her to the oft-referred but unseen wife of Columbo.

The faceless crowdsourcing of the internet requires little provocation to spin conspiracy theories, and the circumstances surrounding the Duchess's current status have spurred a spree of wild speculation.

COMA, DEATH, BIG BROTHER?

Initial rumors began with a claim by Spanish journalist Concha Calleja on the program "Fiesta," stating an alleged "palace informant" disclosed that Kate Middleton had fallen into a coma. This was promptly debunked by the family's representatives, and in February, The Times published an emphatic dismissal: "This is utter nonsense. The journalist did not make an effort to verify the facts purported to her. It's fundamentally fabricated, and here I’ll use polite English: there's no truth to it."

The coma theory gained traction among Twitter users mainly because neither Catherine, her parents, nor her children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, have been seen since. The only royal who has been seen publicly is Prince William, who recently canceled a scheduled appearance at a memorial for King Constantine of Greece, citing "personal reasons" fueling further speculation.

Online detectives suggest that whenever Prince William does seem in public, he appears preoccupied, which may be due to legitimate concerns for his father, King Charles III's cancer diagnosis, and his wife's convalescence. Yet, some have gone so far as to declare that Catherine has passed away and William is in mourning.

If this seems far-fetched, brace for conspiracy theories like Catherine becoming a star on the upcoming season of "Big Brother," set to launch in March, with some believing she will be the surprise celebrity guest. As unbelievable as it sounds, some also believe the Earth is flat or that Elvis Presley is still alive, so no theory is too outlandish to gain a following.

Other theories include the Duchess appearing on "The Masked Singer" or recovering from cosmetic procedures involving fat transfer the latter being a notion suggested by an alleged clinic employee. It's a ludicrous suggestion given Catherine's appearance post-pregnancies.

WHAT WE KNOW FOR CERTAIN

Catherine returned home on January 29th after a two-week hospital stay. The palace expressed gratitude towards the dedicated medical staff at The London Clinic and stated that the Duchess's recovery was progressing well.

Prince William, during his speech at an event for the air ambulance service on February 7th, thanked the public for the supportive messages sent to Catherine and his father during this difficult time.

With the recent memorial for King Constantine, William unexpectedly withdrew his attendance at the service, despite being in Windsor, where the event occurred, which only stirred further speculation regarding Catherine's condition.

The palace issued another statement on February 29th, reinforcing their January guidance on Catherine's recovery and stated they would only provide significant updates, attempting to quell the rampant speculation but with limited success.

WHAT'S NEXT?

According to the BBC, the royal family faces a quandary over public disclosures. While King Charles III's cancer diagnosis has been openly discussed, Catherine's health remains shrouded in mystery. Understandably, William seeks to shield his wife during her delicate recovery, but the lack of answers only incites more questions.

When Catherine resumes her official duties, she can expect intense scrutiny with the public eager to note any changes in her appearance. Consequently, there will likely be careful planning regarding when and how she re-enters the spotlight.

As for King Charles's diagnosis, discussing it openly likely aims to demonstrate that he is still capable of fulfilling his regal responsibilities. Catherine bears no such pressure, being non-heir to the throne, giving her the privilege to recover away from the public eye and in accordance with her wishes for privacy.
