Chinese automaker BYD has overtaken
Tesla in the sales of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in Europe for the first time, selling 7,231 units in April, a remarkable increase of 169% compared to the previous year.
This surge contrasts sharply with
Tesla’s performance, which saw a 49% decline in sales, dropping to 7,165 vehicles during the same period.
These figures were reported by Jato Dynamics, a market research firm.
Overall BEV sales in Europe rose by 28% year-on-year, totaling 184,312 units.
The Volkswagen Group maintained its position as the segment leader, increasing its sales by 61% to 23,514 units.
Notably, the Skoda brand contributed significantly, with its electric vehicle sales skyrocketing by 214% to 13,598 units.
The Skoda Elroq emerged as the best-selling BEV model in April, achieving 7,998 sales.
It was followed closely by three Volkswagen models.
The Volkswagen ID.7 recorded a striking 640% increase to 6,776 units, securing the third position for the month.
In contrast, sales for the
Tesla Model Y fell by 53% to 4,495 units, while the Volvo EX30 saw a 57% decrease to 3,712 units.
Data covering 28 European countries indicated that new passenger car registrations in April were virtually stagnant, totaling 1,078,521 vehicles sold.
This figure represents an increase of only 1,399 units, or 0.1%, compared to the same month last year.
