Budapest Pride Organizers Respond to Government Threats of Ban

Budapest Pride Organizers Respond to Government Threats of Ban

As Hungary's Prime Minister signals intentions to restrict LGBTIQ rights, Pride organizers assert their commitment to this year's event.
Organizers of the Budapest Pride festival have reaffirmed their determination to hold the event despite recent statements from Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who indicated at a yearly evaluation that the Hungarian Constitution could be amended to define individuals strictly as male or female.

In this context, he also suggested a potential ban on the Pride parade planned for this year.

In a press statement, Budapest Pride emphasized the months of planning that have already gone into the 30th anniversary of the Community Festival and March.

The organizers contend that Hungary’s largest annual human rights demonstration will proceed as planned, asserting that even the current constitution, which limits rights in various areas, protects freedoms of assembly and expression.

The organizers noted that historically, numerous attempts have been made to prohibit the parade, all of which have ultimately failed.

They declared, 'It has never succeeded before, and it will not succeed now.

The Pride is a demonstration: whether with twenty or tens of thousands of people, it will happen.

Not only for the Budapest Pride parade, not only for the LGBTIQ community, but for every Hungarian citizen, we fight so that everyone can protest freely, express their views, and stand up for themselves.'

This declaration coincided with a solidarity demonstration in Budapest that focused on trans rights, attended by several hundred individuals who protested against government efforts to marginalize and demonize the trans community.

Carrying slogans such as 'We are stronger than your hate,' they marched from Kálvin tér to Kossuth tér.

The events occurred amid Orbán’s remarks promising a constitutional amendment that would restrict gender identity recognition.

Activist Kristóf Steiner expressed that the intentions behind the government's potential ban would not deter the pride movement, stating, 'It does not matter what Orbán wants to ban because there will be a Pride.'

The activists reminded attendees of the hardships faced by many families struggling with financial insecurity, arguing that government focus should be directed toward addressing these challenges rather than curtailing freedoms.

They reiterated their position against being scapegoated for political purposes, affirming their commitment to activism within Hungary's socio-political landscape.

In addition to the parade plans, relief measures are being demanded by the trans community in Hungary, which include the retraction of the controversial '33rd Paragraph' law that prohibits legal gender recognition and the return of rights that they argue have been unjustly revoked.

In a quick response to Orbán’s comments, Soproni Tamás, the mayor of the VI district of Budapest, reinforced that their district is accommodating and supportive of the upcoming Pride event, promoting an inclusive society.

As political tensions rise, organizators of the Budapest Pride remain steadfast in their resolve to navigate these challenges while advocating for the rights and freedoms of all marginalized groups in Hungary.
