Iran had to demonstrate that it cannot count on Russia's support in a war, just like Israel cannot depend on the support of the Gulf Arab states, says Elizabeth N. Rózsa, a Middle East expert and professor at the National University of Public Service.
HVG: Can the confrontation with Iran strengthen the relationship between Israel and its allies, including the USA, which has been weakened due to the Gaza war?
Elizabeth N. Rózsa:
Joe Biden, the president of the United States – who is extremely committed to Israel – has for the first time reached the point where he says: the USA will not only not participate in a retaliation against Iran, but it will also not support the strike back.
And it's not just that the American-Israeli relationship has hit a low point: With its war in Gaza, Israel has not only dragged down its own prestige and credibility but also that of the USA in the so-called Global South, and beyond. This is a major problem because, in the transforming world order, China will not be able to replace the USA.
It is unknown who will shape the new world order, but the Americans are just losing their great power role.
