The campaign for the European Parliament (EP) and municipal elections has kicked off, blanketing the country with new posters proclaiming the opposition including Péter Márki-Zay as the humble servants of Brussels.
The posters notably feature Klára Dobrev, the Democratic Coalition's lead candidate for the EP, presenting "war" on a platter. Despite opposition claims, this narrative is not new to Fidesz.
Tamás Deutsch, the lead candidate for Fidesz in the EP, has made his stance clear that while the opposition represents war, Fidesz stands for peace.
Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has taken this narrative to new heights. In a recent
Facebook post, he lavishly used the word "war," beginning with observations of war preparations and stating in one sentence that: European leaders have already been dragged into war, consider the war their own, and are also fighting it as such.
Orbán extensively lists the support sent to Ukraine, amplifying the rhetoric.
According to Orbán, the West is one step away from sending troops to Ukraine, accusing Brussels of playing with fire. This claim comes despite the NATO Secretary General's statement earlier this month that no troops would be deployed.
Orbán criticizes Brussels’ actions as "tempting fate," suggesting that the beginnings of world wars are never labeled as such. He references historical precursors to world wars, implying that current events could lead to a similar conclusion.
Orbán had also used the threat of a world war as a fear-mongering tactic before the previous election.
