Russia Sentences Online War Critic To 6 Years Jail
A Russian court in the northern Komi region sentenced Nikolai Farafonov, 35, to six years in prison for online criticism of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, including calling for the burning of military recruitment offices.
Charged with "public incitement to commit terrorist acts," his actions come amid Russia's strict crackdown on dissent concerning the war.
Farafonov, labeled a political prisoner by the NGO Memorial, had been active on Telegram, expressing opposition to the conflict, criticizing political repression, and discussing various local issues.
His arrest in September followed a previous fine in October 2022 for "discrediting" the army. This case is part of a broader pattern of repression, with thousands fined and hundreds jailed for opposing Russia's military actions in Ukraine since its onset in February 2022.
