The officer was walking to his workplace on Róbert Károly Boulevard when he saw a woman wandering confusedly on the roadway.
In a dramatic turn of events, a Budapest police officer saved a woman from committing suicide by pulling her away from an incoming tram at the last moment.
Lieutenant Colonel Attila Kovács, who was off-duty at the time, was walking to his workplace along Róbert Károly Boulevard when he noticed a woman wandering confusedly on the road.
According to a post on the Budapest Police Headquarters'
Facebook page, Lt. Col. Kovács saved the woman's life twice within a minute.
He recounted becoming immediately aware that the woman's presence among the traffic lanes was not accidental but intentional. "She behaved as if she deliberately wanted to get hit," he said.
Rushing to the woman's aid, Kovács quickly guided her to the nearest median strip in the middle of the road, which was the closest safe area. However, the woman suddenly attempted to step in front of an approaching tram.
"I managed to slow her momentum by grabbing her clothes; hence, instead of getting hit by the vehicle, she collided with the tram's front door and then fell to the ground," Lt. Col. Kovács recalled. The incident was also captured on video.
Following the event, the officer called emergency medical services, and the woman, who was found sitting on the ground in a distressed state repeating her wish to end her life, was taken to the hospital for observation.
